Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is used to assess the stomach of horses to diagnose disorders such as equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS)
How does it work?
It is performed under light sedation using a flexible, mobile, video-endoscope.
A complete assessment of your horse is performed from the oesophagus down to the stomach and through to the first part of the small intestine. All of this can be seen on a screen by you and your vet.
EGUS is something we are seeing more and more frequently. If your horse is underperforming, has shown behavioural changes, a poor appetite, poor coat condition, recurrent colic or pain on girthing, then they may be suffering from gastric ulcers.
Using gastroscopy to visualise the horse’s stomach, we are able to see whether ulcers are present or not, and if so which type.
Once diagnosed, we can offer the most appropriate medical treatment and advice on management and nutrition.
